Apple made multiple big announcements during the ‘Its Glowtime’ event, and most of them looked far away from its intent to minimize climate change.
Did you know Apple has issued three green bonds since 2016, with a slew of projects focused on reducing global emissions and spreading clean power worldwide? Apple’s annual events always ensure that a large chunk of the valuable listening time of its audience is spent on its impact on climate change. This year, however, the Annual event concluded with less than 5 minutes in total given to climate-focused announcements.
Why has the tech giant shifted its efforts from hiring Octavia Spencer to play Mother Nature in a highly produced, five-minute promo spot to just glimpses of subtle climate-friendly impacts?
The reason may be simpler than we are digging for - It made fewer efforts towards making the Apple ecosystem environment-friendly and more towards integrating AI capabilities. This theory could be evidently validated by the rare pointers around the positive influence of its various new launches on the environment.
Apple Watch led the climate change conversation during the Annual event and may have been the hero of this year’s initiatives. The previous releases of the Apple Watch Series had aluminum and Ultra models that claimed to be carbon neutral. This year, the higher-end versions of the Apple Watch will have recycled titanium casing instead of stainless steel, enhancing the carbon-neutral impact.
Apple is also introducing carbon-neutral bands, which will allow users to choose from a wide range of options. The band that qualifies to be good for the climate comes with a green flower emoji and some accompanying text explaining the material. “Any Apple Watch in any finish can be carbon neutral,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO. However, providing environment-friendly options rather than mandating them as a basic necessity simplifies Apple’s aggressiveness in the climate change approach.
Apple is taking a new route towards becoming carbon neutral by offering its watches. The company has reduced the number of movable parts, simplifying the supply chain efforts. As a result, the company has urged its suppliers and manufacturers to help shift towards climate-friendly parts, a relatively easier action for the business.
Without bringing much change to its flagship line of iPhones, Apple has made subtle changes in the iPhone 16 that help it emit 1 KG less carbon emissions during its annual lifecycle of usage. The base model has 85% recycled content, while the Pro version has 100% recycled aluminum chassis. All the Apple products now come in a 100% fiber-based and plastic-free packaging.
This ends Apple’s list of climate-empowering efforts, while the company could not reduce its fossil fuel use. As a result, Apple continues to buy carbon credits to compensate for the inevitable damage caused.
