Users worldwide faced email failures, login issues, and Teams disruptions as Microsoft scrambled to restore critical cloud services overnight.

In a major disruption that has impacted the productivity of the enterprise and personal space, Microsoft’s outage of its Microsoft 365 cloud services on January 22-23, 2026, has left thousands of users without access to the applications. The affected applications include Outlook, Teams, Microsoft Defender, Purview, and other key applications across North America and other regions.

As per the outage tracker Downdetector.com, the number of incident reports escalated to over 15,000 during the peak of the outage. However, this number decreased to below 4,000 as the remediation process continued.

Effect of the Microsoft Outage on Users

Users encountered different problems with service failures throughout the day, including emails being delayed or not delivered, login problems, and sometimes errors in Microsoft 365 services.

As per the data from Downdetector, there was a sudden surge in complaints about Outlook emails, which was the most affected service during the outage. These include Teams, Defender, Purview, and Microsoft Store.

The social media sites were filled with the frustration of users who were seeing “451 4.3.2 Temporary server error” messages when trying to send or receive an email. They were also experiencing unresponsive applications and connectivity issues in web and desktop clients.

Microsoft’s Recovery Efforts

Microsoft has confirmed that the fundamental infrastructure that was impacted by the outage has been restored, although the process of stabilization is still underway. The company continued with: “While we've restored the affected infrastructure to a healthy state, further load balancing is required to mitigate the effects. We're routing traffic to other infrastructure in order to recover.” X.

However, despite this progress, the “Service Health Status” at Microsoft still includes “Service degradation on Microsoft 365 (Business or Enterprise)”, which means that some users are still experiencing intermittent performance problems.

The company has asked the administrators to track the developments through the Service Health Dashboard, reiterating that the remediation process has begun but is not yet over.

This is a measured response to the issue, and it reflects Microsoft’s focus on long-term stability as opposed to fast but possibly unstable recovery. This is a trend that is becoming increasingly important in hyperscale cloud infrastructure.
