WhatsApp’s new privacy tool limits chat exports, media downloads, and AI access, giving users stronger control over sensitive conversations.
WhatsApp wants to make sure your private chats stay just that — private.
In its latest update, the Meta-owned messaging platform has introduced a feature called “Advanced Chat Privacy,” aimed at giving users more control over how their messages are handled and shared, particularly in sensitive group settings.
The new feature adds a layer of protection by disabling chat exports, turning off automatic media downloads, and preventing AI tools from accessing messages in those chats. Whether you're coordinating a work project or having a confidential group discussion, Advanced Chat Privacy is designed to keep the conversation contained.
“This new setting, available in both chats and groups, helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp for when you may want extra privacy,” the company explained in its official blog post.
To activate the feature, users can head into any chat, tap the name at the top, and select the Advanced Chat Privacy option. Once it’s on, everyone in the chat will be notified — a transparency move that WhatsApp says is intentional.
There’s a catch though: the feature doesn’t stop someone from taking a screenshot. At least, not yet. According to TechCrunch, WhatsApp is working on bringing screenshot restrictions in future updates to round out the privacy toolkit.
For one, it arrives amid rising user concerns about how content shared in private groups can end up circulating outside the messaging app. With more users using WhatsApp for professional coordination, event planning, and even activism, the need for stronger message boundaries has never been more relevant.
This update builds on a suite of privacy-first features WhatsApp has introduced over the years, including disappearing messages, chat locks, and end-to-end encryption by default. With Advanced Chat Privacy, the app is clearly trying to stay ahead of privacy expectations in the age of screenshot culture and AI integration.
For users, the message is clear: you’re in control — and now you’ve got even more tools to protect what you share.
