Trump as an AI-Generated Pope? President’s Post Offends Catholics Before Conclave

Trump’s AI pope image sparks outrage days before the conclave. Is this a jest gone too far or a bold power play? Here’s the full story!

In true Trump fashion, controversy has once again taken center stage—this time in the heart of the Vatican.

Just days before cardinals gather to elect the next pope, President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated image of himself as the pope. Draped in a white cassock, gold cross, and seated on a throne with a pointed finger to the heavens, the image hit Truth Social on May 2—and then appeared on the official White House accounts.

The image arrives at a particularly sensitive moment. The Catholic world is still reeling from the death of Pope Francis on April 21. His funeral, held on April 26 in St. Peter’s Square, drew mourners from around the globe, including Trump himself, who attended alongside global leaders like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Church remains in a solemn nine-day mourning period, with the conclave to choose Francis’s successor scheduled to begin May 7 in the Sistine Chapel.

For many Catholics, the AI post felt not just tone-deaf—but deeply disrespectful.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” wrote the New York State Catholic Conference on X. “We just buried our beloved Pope Francis, and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave. Do not mock us.”

This wasn’t a one-off. Just days earlier, Trump had joked, “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice,” before suggesting Dolan as a candidate. Now, that “joke” looks more like a campaign.

The Vatican has remained silent. The White House brushed off the backlash, saying Trump attended Pope Francis’s funeral and has always supported religious liberty. But critics aren’t buying it, calling the post a “mockery” of one of Catholicism’s most sacred moments.

With the conclave looming and emotions still raw, Trump’s AI stunt- created using AI art generators may have made headlines—but it left many faithful deeply unamused.
