Tata Boosts iPhone Casing Capacity to 100,000 Units at Hosur Facility

With Apple aiming to localize iPhone manufacturing, Tata Electronics will double casing capacity at its Hosur facility ahead of the September product launch.

In a major boost to India’s status as Apple’s next big manufacturing hub, Tata Electronics is gearing up to double its iPhone enclosure production at its Hosur facility. The company plans on taking the current output from approximately 50,000 units to nearly 100,000.

This expansion, part of Phase II of the facility’s development, is expected to wrap up before Apple’s annual product unveilings in September—a timeline that signals the strategic importance of the ramp-up for both Tata and Apple. The Hosur plant faced a temporary setback in September 2024 due to a fire that disrupted operations, but production levels have since been fully restored.

Tata’s ambitions are not just limited to infrastructure. In a move that underscores its growing influence in Apple’s supply chain, Tata Electronics acquired a 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India earlier this year, following its acquisition of Wistron’s India operations in March 2024. These moves are transforming Tata into one of Apple’s most significant manufacturing partners outside China.

The expansion aligns closely with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s May 1 earnings call statement that India is poised to become the primary manufacturing base for iPhones sold in the US. In fact, the majority of iPhones sold in the US this June quarter are expected to be made in India—marking a major shift in Apple’s global supply chain strategy.

This isn’t an isolated play! Apple’s other key suppliers, including Foxconn and Jabil, are also scaling up Indian operations. Foxconn is investing heavily in mobile assembly lines, while Jabil is reportedly increasing production of AirPods casings in the country. All of this comes amid rising US-China trade tensions, prompting Apple to accelerate its diversification efforts.

While Apple and Tata Electronics have not officially commented on the expansion, industry insiders suggest this is only the beginning of a deeper Indo-Apple alliance.

India’s iPhone moment may finally be here—and Tata is helping lead the charge!
