Sora AI Reopens New User Registrations As Traffic Stabilizes
Date: December 13, 2024
Sora AI had shut down new registrations due to a sudden surge in traffic on its website. The signup page is now back online to take new user registrations.
OpenAI launched an upgraded version of its AI video generator through Sora and Sora Turbo versions on December 9, 2024. The new models open for public access are significantly faster and more efficient in output than the previewed version early this year. As a result, Sora AI’s official website experienced a sudden surge in traffic from both existing and new users.

This overwhelming rise in demand caused tremendous strain on the huge server base of OpenAI. In response, the company decided to close new user registrations till the influx subsided. As the wave of excitement cooled down, the servers began working normally without overloading, and Sora reopened new signups and subscriptions to ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans after December 12, 2024 midnight.
Sora AI is the flagship AI video generator model of OpenAI that acts as a standalone product. Users subscribed to the Plus plan can create up to 50 videos (1,000 credits) of up to 720p resolution and 5s duration. Those subscribed to the Pro plan will get access to a more generous offering from Sora AI.

This includes generating up to 500 videos (10,000 credits), unlimited relaxed videos of up to 1080p resolution, 20s duration, and five concurrent generations. These AI-generated videos can be downloaded without a watermark.
Due to compliance regulations in Europe and the UK, Sora AI may not be made open to the public in the near future. The company has not made any public announcement regarding the launch plans in these regions.
