AGI dreams are tarnished for many. Sam Altman clarifies the human-like model is still underway.
People on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have already started speculating about the launch of Artificial General Intelligence. This has come after some OpenAI employees posted about AGI in their recent teasers, and AI fans took it as a sign that the company has reached the much-hyped milestone.
However, the thing that lit the spark into a flame was Sam Altman’s interview with Bloomberg.
In the conversation, the tech giant reportedly mentioned that their latest o3 model, the successor to the o1 model released last September, had passed the ARC-AGI test, which is said to be the benchmark for AGI.
The model we’re announcing on Friday 17 passed this benchmark. For five years it sat there, unsolved. It consists of problems like this. They said if you can score 85% on this, we’re going to consider that a “pass.” And our system—with no custom work, just out of the box—got an 87.5%.

Altman also said that OpenAI is now “setting its sights on superintelligence, which is leaps and bounds beyond AGI, just as AGI is to AI.”
However, Sam has now taken what can be assumed a U-turn on the statement that OpenAI is not launching AGI anytime soon, nor have they achieved it yet. The tech visionary took to X, urging people to “pls chill” and “cut your expectations 100x”.

we are not gonna deploy AGI next month, nor have we built it.
we have some very cool stuff for you but pls chill and cut your expectations 100x!
Though Sam Altman has shut down the rumors surrounding AGI and its launch in the foreseeable future, he posted on X on Jan 18 about the launch of new AI and APIs. In the post, the OpenAI’s CEO thanked the external safety researchers who tested the o3-mini and stated that the new version will be out soon.
thank you to the external safety researchers who tested o3-mini.

we have now finalized a version and are beginning the release process; planning to ship in ~a couple of weeks.
also, we heard the feedback: will launch api and chatgpt at the same time!
(it's very good.)
While AGI may still be on the distant horizon, OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI and AI chatbots with groundbreaking advancements like the o3 model. As Sam Altman urges the world to "chill" and manage expectations, the journey toward truly transformative AI remains as exciting as ever—just not quite as close as some may have hoped.
