Rockstar Games announces comprehensive rollout of 2010 Western classic with enhanced features, free upgrades, and Netflix integration.
After years of fans clamoring for a proper current-gen version, Rockstar Games has finally delivered. The studio confirmed Wednesday that its critically acclaimed 2010 Western epic Red Dead Redemption will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Netflix (iOS and Android) on December 2. This is pretty much every platform gamers could ask for.
The announcement, made through the company's official Newswire, promises what Rockstar describes as an opportunity to experience these epic Western adventures on the latest mobile devices and current generation consoles—with free upgrades, the ability to carry over game progress, and a number of enhancements.
The current-generation console versions, developed with help from Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games, bring some much-needed performance improvements. We're talking "a smooth 60 frames per second experience" alongside enhanced image quality, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K, according to Rockstar's announcement. For a game that's been stuck at 30 FPS on older hardware, this is a genuinely big deal.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version is particularly interesting, showcasing what the new console can do with DLSS support, HDR, mouse controls, and that same buttery 60 FPS gameplay at high resolution. Rockstar says they've "taken full advantage of" the Switch 2's hardware—and it shows.
Rockstar chose convenience over profits, and for that, it deserves a lot of credit. If you already own Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, or the Xbox One digital backward compatible version, you can upgrade to the shiny new versions without spending a dime. PlayStation and Switch players can even carry over their save data, so you won't lose hours of progress wrangling horses and hunting bounties.
The game will also be available through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and GTA+ Games Library starting December 2, expanding access for subscribers of these services.
The most surprising part of this announcement came from Rockstar and Netflix. Both companies are collaborating to release the game on iOS and Android devices on December 2, exclusively through Netflix Games. In a press release, Netflix stated:
“Now you can play it anywhere you want because, for the first time ever, it’s coming to mobile via Netflix.”
If you've got a Netflix subscription, you're good to go—no extra charge.
This is Rockstar and Netflix's second rodeo together, following the 2023 release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on the platform. The mobile versions will pack in both the main game and the beloved Undead Nightmare expansion, complete with "mobile-friendly control options" designed specifically for touchscreen gameplay. How well that'll work for a game built for controllers remains to be seen, but it's an interesting experiment.
The timing here is pretty telling. Rockstar recently pushed Grand Theft Auto VI from May 2026 to November 2026, leaving fans with a longer wait than expected. The multi-platform release of Red Dead Redemption feels like a smart play to keep the community engaged while everyone waits for the next big thing.
