The AI-powered browser that blends search, work, and idea flow is out of beta — here’s what that means.
“We want everyone to have the choice to use Comet. Beginning today, you can now download it for free, at perplexity.ai/comet.”
When Comet first launched in July, it was reserved for high-tier users. The browser was initially locked behind Perplexity’s $200/month Max subscription, with later limited access for Pro users and a waitlist. Today’s shift means use no longer hinges on subscription status; core features are now unlocked for all users for free.
With this move, Perplexity is banking on broad adoption. The hope is that removing the cost barrier will accelerate its reach and pose a stronger challenge to incumbents like Chrome, which has begun embedding AI features itself.
Moreover, browsers and search engines are rapidly folding AI deeper into their core. Google recently injected Gemini into Chrome, while OpenAI rolled out its “Operator” agent, and Opera joined the race with Neon.
While the main Comet experience is now free, Perplexity is introducing Comet Plus, a $5/month add-on (included for Pro and Max users). This premium layer grants access to high-quality journalism from outlets like CNN, The Washington Post, Le Monde, and more. Moreover, participating publishers will be compensated based on how their content is used in this AI context.
Comet is not just another browser with add-ons. It sees itself as a living assistant in your browser:
As Perplexity put it: “Suddenly, asking new questions is easier, the delightful default-mode of internet use. … We learned: the internet is better on Comet.” Further, magnifying that, they reported: “When Perplexity users first downloaded Comet, the number of questions they asked increased by 6–18× in the first day.”
