As Google struggles to sustain its dominance over the online search market, OpenAI plans to launch its browser to directly rival the tech giant.
OpenAI entered the online search market last month with an AI search platform, SearchGPT. The successful adoption of the AI Search platform has sparked new conversations about building a web browser product. This move pits OpenAI directly against Google, who currently holds the lion’s share of the global online search industry.
OpenAI is reportedly in talks with website and app developers like Conde Nest, Redfin, Eventribite, and Priceline. The source who reported the interaction cited that these people have seen prototypes or designs of the proposed product.
Google has been trying hard to level with the advancements of OpenAI with its Gemini LLM models and multiple partnerships with top mobile device manufacturers. Though not at par, Google’s efforts in the AI landscape have been successful in its own clientele. As a result, the tech giant has integrated multiple AI features across its Workspace and general products.
The ongoing antitrust case of Google has provided top industry players like OpenAI to fight for potential market share split that may arise from the DOJ’s drastic proposals. Google’s 61% market dominance in online search will now be open to smaller search engines, alternative browsers, and AI-first platforms.
This seems to be the right time to get invested in the online search market, especially through an in-house web browser. While building a new one is possible, OpenAI may also look at buying the forced sale of Google Chrome, if Justice Amit Mehra approves the DOJ’s proposed remedy. The ongoing antitrust case has also caused Alphabet Inc.’s stock price to fall sharply over the last few months.
OpenAI is also planning to partner with Samsung to power its devices with artificial intelligence features of ChatGPT models. Samsung has been one of the biggest partners of Google. The new conversations reported by the people involved with the matter indicate a deviation of Google’s partners to safeguard their intellectual property and growth aspects.
