OpenAI strengthens its AI applications and product testing capabilities with the acquisition of Statsig and the appointment of Vijaye Raji to lead its applications unit.
In a significant move, OpenAI has announced its acquisition of Statsig for $1.1 billion. Statsig specializes in enabling companies by providing A/B testing and real-time decision-making tools. This acquisition will bring Statsig’s technology into OpenAI’s fold, enhancing its AI product offerings and solidifying its position as a leader in AI innovation.
As part of the acquisition, Statsig’s CEO, Vijaye Raji, will join OpenAI as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications. Raji, who has a proven track record in building scalable consumer and B2B products, will be responsible for overseeing the product engineering teams at OpenAI. He will report directly to Fidji Simo, the former Instacart CEO, who took on the leadership of OpenAI’s applications business earlier this year. Simo stated in the OpenAI blog,
“Vijaye has a remarkable record of building new consumer and B2B products and systems at scale. He’s joining at a time when our models are opening entirely new ways to build, and his leadership will help turn that progress into safe applications that empower people with many new tools to improve their lives, help companies increase their impact, and allow developers to build faster and better products.”
For Raji, joining OpenAI represents a remarkable opportunity to contribute to a mission he deeply believes in. Raji said in a blog post.
“The journey with Statsig has been deeply gratifying, leading me to this moment and giving me conviction that we will continue helping teams ship better software every day.”
His leadership is expected to accelerate OpenAI's progress in integrating advanced AI models into practical, safe, and scalable applications.
What the Acquisition Means for OpenAI's Future
OpenAI’s acquisition of Statsig is the latest in a series of strategic investments aimed at expanding its capabilities. The company has already made significant acquisitions in the past year, including its high-profile purchase of Jony Ive’s AI devices startup IO for nearly $6.5 billion in an all-equity deal, pushing OpenAI into the hardware space.
As mentioned, Statsig powers real-time A/B testing, feature flagging, and decision-making tools for some, which will allow OpenAI to further enhance its applications, including ChatGPT and Codex. The company has emphasized that Statsig will continue operating independently out of its Seattle office, serving its existing customer base, with plans for a measured integration into OpenAI’s broader operations.
The acquisition also brings OpenAI one step closer to its goal of creating safer, more reliable AI applications that can be used across a variety of industries. With Raji’s expertise and Statsig’s advanced tools, OpenAI is positioning itself for continued growth and innovation in the AI space.
