Where Did Copilot Go? Microsoft’s Update Removes AI Assistant

Microsoft’s latest Windows update had an unexpected issue—Copilot is gone! Here’s what’s causing the problem and what users can do.

Did Microsoft just give some Windows users exactly what they wanted…by accident? This was a surprise for Windows users after the latest Windows 11 update, released on March 11, 2025. Microsoft has officially confirmed that its monthly Patch Tuesday update unintentionally uninstalled and unpinned Copilot from some Windows 11 and Windows 10 devices, leaving users either frustrated or pleasantly surprised, depending on their stance on the AI tool.

Microsoft’s Response and a Temporary Fix

Microsoft acknowledged the bug in a support article, assuring users that a fix is in the works. However, for those who need Copilot back immediately, there’s a workaround—it can be manually redownloaded from the Microsoft Store and repinned to the taskbar. The issue affects Windows 11 (updates KB5053598 and KB5053602) and Windows 10 (update KB5053606), leading Microsoft to investigate a resolution to restore Copilot automatically in an upcoming patch.

Inconvenience or an Accidental Blessing for the Users?

In a twist of irony, some users have greeted the accidental removal of Copilot with unexpected enthusiasm. One Reddit user quipped, "Microsoft accidentally fixes Windows 11," reflecting a sentiment among those who viewed Copilot as unnecessary bloat.

Another chimed in, "Sounds like an upgrade to me," suggesting that the unintended uninstallation was, in their eyes, an improvement. This incident has sparked discussions about user preferences and the balance between integrating new features and maintaining a streamlined user experience.

Microsoft’s Bigger AI Plans Remain Unaffected

Despite this unexpected setback, Microsoft remains fully committed to expanding Copilot’s role across its ecosystem. In fact, the company recently announced "Copilot for Gaming", an AI assistant for the Xbox app aimed at helping players with in-game queries and tasks.

While this accidental uninstall may have disrupted the AI’s presence for now, it’s clear that Microsoft isn’t backing down from its vision of AI-powered computing. For now, affected users can manually reinstall Copilot, while those who’ve wanted it gone might just enjoy this accidental reprieve.

Either way, Microsoft’s journey with artificial intelligence continues. and this glitch is just a bump in the road, whether it is a smooth detour or a pothole big enough to send Copilot flying - it depends on who you ask!
