Meta did it again! Reportedly recruits Apple’s top AI models executive, Ruoming Pang, to strengthen its Superintelligence Labs and AGI ambitions.
In what marks a big and seemingly ‘underhanded’ move, Meta has reportedly recruited Ruoming Pang, Apple’s former head of AI models. As per reports by Bloomberg, Pang, known for his leadership in Apple’s AI foundation models, is set to join Meta’s ambitious Superintelligence Labs division. This move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to bump up its AI capabilities as the company struggles to keep up in the field of artificial intelligence.
Pang’s departure from Apple comes as a blow to the tech giant, which has been focusing on developing proprietary AI models. At Apple, Pang led a team of around 100 engineers, working on key innovations such as Genmoji and on-device text summarization. However, sources suggest that internal struggles over the direction of AI development and a series of leadership changes may have contributed to Pang’s decision to make the leap to Meta.
Meta, under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, has been ramping up its AI recruitment, making major strides with its Superintelligence Labs. Co-led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, the division is focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI). Pang’s recruitment follows a wave of AI talent moves from major competitors, signaling Meta’s growing ambitions to dominate the AI space.
The competition for top AI talent is only intensifying. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all in a race to hire the best minds in the industry. All the while, mass layoffs continue to scare the general everyday developer. With Pang now on board, Meta hopes to strengthen its position in the field and further its long-term vision for AGI technologies.
Apple, for its part, has yet to officially comment on Pang’s exit. The company has recently reorganized its AI leadership, with Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell now overseeing its AI operations. Despite some high-profile AI announcements at its recent WWDC, Apple’s AI efforts have faced some criticism, and the company will now need to work harder to keep pace with its competitors in this high-stakes race.
As Meta continues to gather AI expertise, this talent war will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence—and could determine who leads the charge toward AGI.
