Meta May Bring AI Voice Chat Feature To WhatsApp
Date: May 15, 2025
Meta AI is reportedly working on a new voice chat feature that will enable users to command the AI chatbot directly through voice messages.
Meta is gaining a competitive edge in the AI landscape by adding new AI chatbot features that prevent users from relying on other platforms. WabetaInfo recently reported a new AI feature in the making that will empower users to send voice commands and get their work done directly. WhatsApp may soon add an AI voice chat feature that allows users to execute voice-based interactions.
The AI voice feature was first spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.18.18 update found on the Google Play Store. If this works out, users may soon see the AI voice chat making its way into the next stable update of WhatsApp.
Like textual interactions with Meta AI on WhatsApp, the voice-based interactions will enable a hands-free mode. As speaking is faster than typing, the new voice mode will add convenience to users while making conversations faster. Users can also choose a voice of their choice, much like the existing AI voice assistant Siri on Apple devices.
According to the report, WhatsApp is also testing a shortcut to awaken the AI voice chat feature on the app with a single button click. Upon receiving voice commands, the AI will be able to answer their queries or perform certain tasks as per the permissions it has been given. The shortcut may potentially be designed in a floating button format within the chat list.
The AI voice mode can be easily enabled or disabled in the chat window itself. Users can enable voice mode, allowing the AI to listen to conversations and voices until they are prompted to stop. A visual indicator will also be provided to continuously inform users about the status of the AI voice chat. The listening feature automatically turns off once a user leaves the AI chat window, and the visual indicator disappears.
Along with the new voice command control, WhatsApp is also developing a unified Contact syncing and filtering feature. The underdevelopment feature was first spotted on WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.24.18.14 update. With these features getting added frequently, WhatsApp will ensure its leadership status in the social media messaging industry.
