Tech giant's promotional video briefly surfaces online, confirming long-rumored display-enabled smart glasses ahead of Tuesday's Connect event.
In an unexpected twist just days before Meta's annual Connect conference, the company inadvertently revealed its worst-kept secret through its own YouTube channel. A briefly posted (now removed) promotional video has confirmed the existence of the "Meta Ray-Ban Display" smart glasses, complete with a heads-up display (HUD) and neural wristband control, marking a significant evolution in the company's wearables strategy.
The leak, first spotted and reported by UploadVR on Sunday, occurred when Meta posted an unlisted video to its official YouTube channel before quickly removing it. However, the footage had already been captured and reposted across social media platforms, giving the tech community an unexpected preview of what's likely to be announced at Meta Connect 2025, which begins Tuesday, September 17.
The clip shows the fixed HUD, visible to the right eye only, being used for Meta AI and on-foot navigation, as well as the wristband being used for finger-swiping letters on a physical surface to respond to a message.
The revelation that these HUD-enabled glasses will carry Ray-Ban branding comes as somewhat of a surprise to industry observers. Last year, The Information reported that the glasses would be released by Meta without EssilorLuxottica, because the Ray-Ban and Oakley owner "balked" at how thick the temple of the glasses needed to be to deliver a display. The new design shows noticeably thicker temples compared to existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses, suggesting a compromise was reached between the two companies.
This partnership appears to have been strengthened by Meta's recent financial commitment. Meta has invested €3 billion in Ray-Ban and Oakley owner EssilorLuxottica, taking a 3% stake in the eyewear giant, according to Bloomberg and Reuters reports cited by UploadVR.
The leaked video reveals a monocular heads-up display positioned over the right eye, enabling users to view notifications, navigation instructions, and AI-powered translations without looking at their phones. The glasses demonstrate several practical applications including:
Perhaps most intriguingly, the glasses are shown paired with what Meta has previously called a "Neural" wristband – an sEMG (surface electromyography) device that can detect subtle electrical signals from muscle movements, allowing users to control the interface through hand gestures without touching the glasses themselves.
While these glasses represent a significant step forward for Meta's augmented reality ambitions, it's important to note that they don't offer the full AR experience demonstrated in Meta's Orion prototype. Instead, they appear to be positioned as a practical stepping stone between current smart glasses and future fully-immersive AR devices.
The official announcement is expected during Mark Zuckerberg's keynote at Meta Connect 2025, scheduled for 5 PM PT on Wednesday, September 17. Given the detailed nature of the leak, including product naming and functionality demonstrations, it appears Meta was close to revealing these products anyway.
