Meet John Ternus, the Quiet Hardware Boss Who Could Soon Run Apple
Date: November 17, 2025
As Tim Cook weighs a possible exit, Apple’s long-time hardware chief steps into the spotlight as the top internal contender.
Apple is quietly preparing for life after Tim Cook, and potentially, John Ternus will take over. According to reports, Apple’s board has intensified succession talks, with scenarios in which Cook could step down as early as next year.
If that happens, the handover would mark Apple’s biggest leadership change since Cook himself replaced Steve Jobs in 2011. In those 14 years, Cook has turned Apple into a $4 trillion company, expanded services revenue, and pushed large-scale outsourced manufacturing, while also navigating antitrust scrutiny and criticism over slowing product excitement.
Ternus, 50, is Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. He leads the teams behind the iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and Apple Watch. He joined Apple’s product design group in 2001, rose to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013, and was promoted to his current role in 2021. Over that time, he has overseen every iPad generation, the AirPods line-up, and the high-stakes transition of the Mac from Intel chips to Apple silicon.
Ternus has become a regular face at Apple keynotes, fronting launches for new Macs, iPads, and iPhones. This is also a visibility shift many insiders read as grooming for a bigger job.
Also, the speculation comes just as long-time COO Jeff Williams, once seen as Cook’s most likely successor, heads into retirement. His exit has triggered a wider reshuffle across Apple’s top ranks, with expanded responsibilities for services boss Eddy Cue, software chief Craig Federighi, and Ternus himself.
Cook, who recently turned 65, has hinted repeatedly that Apple wants its next CEO to be an insider. For now, Apple has not commented publicly on timing, and a formal announcement is not expected before the company’s next earnings call in January.
