AI Mode and Gemini 2.0 are taking Google Search to the next level—smarter, faster, and more intuitive!
Google is redefining search with the introduction of AI Mode, an experimental feature now available through Google Search Labs. Alongside this, the company has officially rolled out Gemini 2.0-powered AI Overviews, promising a more intelligent, responsive, and multimodal search experience.
Unlike the existing AI Overviews, which provide brief AI-generated summaries, AI Mode delivers a more immersive, conversational experience, allowing users to interact with search results through text, voice, and even images.
VP of Product at Google Search, Robby Stein, said AI Mode “is particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, comparison, and reasoning.”
This capability makes it one of the most advanced AI tools for search yet! He further describes this as a new way of searching, one that involves deeper reasoning, contextual thinking, and better multimodal understanding.
Google’s AI Overviews, which summarize key information directly in search results, are now powered by Gemini 2.0, a major upgrade from its previous versions. The rollout began in December 2024, with Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirming its full deployment.
This upgrade improves the speed, accuracy, and ability to handle complex queries, particularly in coding, math, and multimodal searches.
Since AI Mode is still experimental, it's currently available only through Google Search Labs. Initially, Google One AI Premium subscribers have been invited to test it, with broader access expected soon. You can try it by:
AI Mode employs an advanced “query fan-out” approach, conducting multiple related searches at once across different subtopics and sources to generate more comprehensive answers. It also introduces a more interactive desktop interface, displaying a mix of relevant web links, images, and videos based on the nature of the query.
Despite the rise of AI-powered answers, Google reassures that web content remains central to its approach. AI Mode intelligently decides when to include direct hyperlinks (for transactional searches like booking flights) and when to prioritize visual elements.
With AI Mode in testing and Gemini 2.0 now fully integrated into AI Overviews, Google is making it clear that the future of search is smarter, faster, and more interactive than ever for all its users!
