Google Is Prepping an AI Agent to Help Developers — Just in Time for I/O 2025

Google teases a new AI agent for coders, hinting at a smarter, more automated dev experience just before I/O 2025.

With its annual I/O conference around the corner, Google is teasing something new for developers — not just a better IDE or documentation tool, but a full-blown AI agent. Designed to lend a hand throughout the software development process, this upcoming tool could be the most practical use of generative AI from Google yet.

The Agent That Writes (and Explains) Code

The AI, still under wraps publicly, has reportedly been demoed internally and to select partners. As per a report from The Information, this isn’t just a glorified chatbot — it can respond to development tasks, help explain code, and even generate documentation. Think of it as a pair programmer that doesn’t take lunch breaks.

Google is betting big on AI integration at every level of its platform, and this new agent is no exception. It's a quiet but clear signal that Mountain View wants to compete not just in flashy consumer AI but in the day-to-day tools developers rely on.

More Than Just Code

This year’s I/O, kicking off May 20 in Mountain View, is shaping up to be a broad showcase of AI muscle. Alongside the new dev assistant, Google is also expected to highlight how its Gemini chatbot (particularly in voice mode) works with XR wearables like smart glasses and headsets — a possible preview of Android’s future in spatial computing.

And with Android 16 updates also on the docket, the two-day event could cover everything from AI-first apps to developer workflows that feel more automated than ever.

Under Pressure to Deliver

All of this comes amid growing scrutiny. Investors want to see clear returns from the billions Google has poured into AI. Regulators are watching closely too, especially around its dominance in advertising and search. So it's no surprise the company is leaning into AI as a way to reshape its offerings — and prove its long-term vision is more than hype.

Google hasn’t confirmed many specifics yet. But if these tools live up to the promise, they could redefine how developers write, debug, and deploy code across Google’s platforms — and beyond.
