OpenAI's ChatGPT surpasses 400 million weekly users, doubling enterprise adoption as AI integration accelerates across businesses, developers, and daily life.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT just hit a new milestone—over 400 million weekly active users, a massive jump from the 300 million reported just two months ago. “we feel very fortunate to serve 5% of the world every week,” said Brad Lightcap on X. The surge highlights just how deeply AI-powered tools are weaving into everyday life, from casual users experimenting with AI-generated content to businesses integrating it into workflows.
Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap credits the growth to simple, organic adoption.
"People hear about it through word of mouth. They see the utility of it. They see their friends using it," Lightcap said, emphasizing the word-of-mouth effect driving ChatGPT’s popularity.
While many assumed AI interest would plateau, OpenAI’s numbers tell a different story. Enterprise adoption has exploded, with over 2 million businesses now actively using ChatGPT enterprise—double what it was in September.
And it’s not just large companies jumping on board. Many businesses first encounter ChatGPT when employees use it for personal tasks, only to later realize its potential at scale. According to OpenAI, this organic adoption has fueled rapid growth in its enterprise subscriptions.
“There’s an overall effect of people really wanting these tools, and seeing that these tools are really valuable.”
- Brad Lightcap
Beyond the casual user and enterprise boom, developer activity around OpenAI's models is surging.
In the last six months, traffic for OpenAI’s reasoning models has doubled, while its o3 model—released in late January—has seen a fivefold increase in usage. These trends suggest AI isn't just an occasional curiosity; it's becoming an indispensable tool for businesses, researchers, and creators alike.
The AI space is more competitive than ever, with new challengers like DeepSeek emerging from China, promising high-powered models at lower costs. But OpenAI’s staggering user engagement signals that, for now, it remains the dominant force in generative AI.
With GPT-4.5 launching soon and GPT-5 on the horizon, OpenAI’s momentum shows no sign of slowing. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in how we work and communicate, the real question isn't whether people will use it—but how much further it will go.
