Apple rolls out Digital ID, letting US passport holders store verified identity credentials in Apple Wallet for TSA screening, bringing biometric security to your credentials.
Apple is radically transforming how we prove our identity. Forget scrambling for your physical passport or driver’s license. Your ID is now secure, encrypted, and sitting inside your Apple Wallet. This massive shift focuses on the newly launched Apple Digital ID passport feature. It gives U.S. travelers a simple, private way to present their identification.
But there's a catch. Digital ID cannot replace your physical passport for international travel. You still need the actual document for border crossings. This limitation keeps the feature focused on domestic use only.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a release:
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch. Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”
Apple Digital ID uses encryption for all stored data. Your passport information is stored only on your device. Apple cannot track when or where you present credentials. The company doesn't see what data you shared. Biometric authentication ensures only you can access your Digital ID. Face ID or Touch ID verification happens every single time. This prevents unauthorized use if someone steals your device.
The beta rollout focuses on TSA checkpoints first. Apple plans to expand acceptance to select businesses and organizations later. Future updates will enable a digital ID for USA travelers to verify identity in apps and online platforms.
Digital ID adoption could speed up airport security lines. TSA processing becomes faster when passengers use Apple Wallet instead of fumbling for physical documents. The convenience factor appeals to frequent flyers. However, keeping your physical passport remains necessary. International flights still require the original document. Apple makes this limitation clear in their announcement. Anyone with a US passport qualifies, regardless of their state's digital ID status.
Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia recently joined the state ID program. Japan became the first international market with My Number Card support. These expansions show Apple's commitment to digital identity solutions.
Apple Wallet continues evolving as a digital identity hub. Whether Digital ID becomes the standard for airport security depends on adoption rates and expanded use cases in the coming months.
