Anthropic has raised $4 billion in a fresh funding round backed by its existing investor Amazon. Amazon will now act as its training partner.
Anthropic has nearly doubled the value of its longtime backer Amazon after raising $4 Billion from the eCommerce giant. Amazon has now elevated its position from being a minority investor to the official training partner of Anthropic’s AI advancements.
Amazon is also the primary cloud partner of Anthropic and is ferociously competing with close rivals Microsoft CoPilot and Alphabet’s Google. The main focus of this partnership is to enhance the client value of cloud businesses through AI-powered tools. Anthropic is known for its genAI chatbot Claude, and has released multiple models to cover broader audience requirements.
In the past few years, AI investment from big tech giants like Amazon have increased rapidly. The recent investment round underscores the value of capitalizing on AI advancements as can be seen in the billions of dollars flowing into AI startups.
Anthropic has raised $6.6 billion from investors collectively and reached a valuation of $157 Billion. The recent fundraising rounds have positioned the AI startup as one of the most valued companies in the world.
Along with the recent investment, Anthropic also plans to train and deploy its foundational models on Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips, two of the most powerful processors for running AI capabilities seamlessly. The intensive training process puts Amazon’s latest chips as a high-priority buy for startups.
However, Nvidia continues to dominate the semiconductor chip industry that powers AI processors. Nvidia also considers Amazon as one of its top hyperscaler customers. The rise of Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips will help Amazon improve independence and minimize reliance on a supply chain monopoly to cut prices of its latest AI products and services.
Last year, Anthropic announced that Alphabet Inc. invested $500 Million and has promised to invest $1.5 Billion more over time. Currently, the AI startup used Google’s Cloud services as part of its business operations.
