Alibaba pushes deeper into AI with its most powerful model yet, as CEO Eddie Wu pledges fresh investment in AI infrastructure.
Alibaba Group has taken another decisive step in the global AI race with the launch of its most advanced model to date: Qwen3-Max. The model was unveiled at the company’s annual cloud computing conference in Hangzhou. It contains over 1 trillion parameters, making it the largest release yet from the Chinese tech giant.
Company executives highlighted the system’s strengths in code generation and autonomous agent tasks, which allow the AI to carry out complex goals with minimal human prompting. Zhou Jingren, Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud, said the model not only delivers breakthroughs in reasoning and multilingual understanding but also achieves state-of-the-art results on industry benchmarks.
Outperforming Rivals
According to Alibaba, Qwen3-Max-Instruct has ranked among the top three globally on the Text Arena leaderboard, surpassing even OpenAI’s GPT-5-Chat in certain tasks. On SWE-Bench Verified, a real-world coding benchmark, the system scored 69.6, while on Tau2-Bench, it posted a leading score of 74.8, outperforming Anthropic’s Claude and DeepSeek V3.1.
Another version, Qwen3-Max-Thinking, is still in training but has already demonstrated unprecedented reasoning power, achieving perfect scores on challenging mathematics benchmarks.
Billion-Dollar Commitment to AI
The model’s debut comes as Alibaba doubles down on its commitment to artificial intelligence, pledging huge investments in infrastructure to sustain its ambitions. CEO Eddie Wu used the conference to reaffirm a plan, first announced in February, to spend around 380 billion yuan ($53 billion) in the next 3 years. Wu also said:
“The speed of AI industry development has far exceeded our expectations, and the industry’s demand for AI infrastructure has also far exceeded our expectations,”.
Additionally, Wu also told attendees that Alibaba aims to become a full-stack AI service provider, signaling the company’s intent to compete head-to-head with both domestic rivals and Western firms like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. Moreover, the remarks pushed Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares up as much as 4.1% on Wednesday.
AI Now Core to Alibaba’s Strategy
Once best known for its dominance in e-commerce, Alibaba has made clear that AI will define its next chapter. Moreover, the company earlier this year declared that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is now its primary goal. With Qwen3-Max, it has set a new benchmark in scale, capability, and ambition, underlining China’s determination to compete in the era of intelligent computing.
