Airtel Strikes Deal with SpaceX to Bring Starlink to India

Airtel partners with SpaceX to bring Starlink satellite internet to India, aiming to boost connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

Bharti Airtel is teaming up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite internet services to India. This is a move that could reshape the country’s connectivity landscape. The agreement, still pending regulatory approval, would see Airtel distributing Starlink’s services and infrastructure across the nation.

A Major Bet on Satellite Broadband

This isn’t just another telecom deal. With millions in India still lacking reliable internet access, particularly in remote areas, Starlink’s satellite-powered broadband could be a game-changer. Airtel, one of India’s biggest telecom providers, plans to integrate Starlink’s technology into its existing network while also supplying hardware through its vast distribution system.

The partnership isn’t just about consumer internet. Starlink’s connectivity will also be targeted at businesses, government initiatives, and critical sectors like healthcare and education. If approved, this deal could significantly expand India's digital reach.

Regulatory Hurdles Still in Play

While the deal is promising, regulatory approval remains the big question. SpaceX has long been seeking clearance to operate Starlink in India, but spectrum allocation policies have been a sticking point. India’s telecom industry remains divided over whether satellite broadband providers should acquire spectrum through auctions or administrative allocation.

The agreement also comes on the heels of Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. In the meeting, the two discussed India’s ambitions in space and AI. With the government actively pushing for broader digital inclusion, this deal could align well with India’s national priorities.
