Did an AI-Powered Robot Attack People at a Festival in China? Here’s What Really Happened
Date: February 22, 2025
Viral video of AI robot's erratic behavior at Chinese festival sparks online debate over technology's safety and reliability.
A video circulating online has left people stunned. The footage (which has sparked a wave of speculation) shows the machine moving erratically before what appears to be a sudden lunge toward the crowd. But was it an actual attack, or just a malfunction?
What the Video Shows
In the clip, the humanoid robot is seen participating in a festival event when it unexpectedly moves toward a group of spectators. Some viewers have termed the motion as aggressive, with theories flying across social media about the dangers of AI-driven machines. Others, however, suggested the robot may have simply lost balance.

Authorities and event organizers have since stepped in to give some clarifications. According to official statements, the robot experienced an unexpected malfunction. But, at no point did it intentionally move to harm anyone. It was part of a demonstration showcasing advancements in robotics, and prior to the incident, it had been functioning normally.
Social Media Reacts
Despite the official explanation, online discussions have taken a life of their own. Some social media users joked that we might be entering a real-life sci-fi era, while others expressed concerns about the rapid advancement of AI-powered robots in public spaces.
One user wrote, "We’ve all seen this in movies—robots turning on humans! Maybe it’s happening for real?" Another added, "It’s probably just a glitch, but still, this is why AI safety needs to be taken seriously."
Earlier this year, China’s Spring Festival Gala featured an impressive performance involving robots. In the event, 16 Unitree H1 humanoid robots danced alongside human performers (flawlessly). The event highlighted the potential of AI and robotics in entertainment and beyond.
Still, incidents like the one at the festival make us rethink the cutting-edge technology we are developing. And the responsibility that comes with it.
