Adobe Adds Generative AI Magic to Premiere Pro, Lets Editors ‘Extend’ Footage Without Reshoots
Date: April 03, 2025
Adobe’s new Generative Extend tool in Premiere Pro uses AI to effortlessly extend video and audio, streamlining post-production workflows
Adobe is taking a bold leap into the future of video editing. On Tuesday, the software giant announced the launch of “Generative Extend” for Premiere Pro—a groundbreaking feature powered by Firefly, Adobe’s proprietary generative AI model. The tool allows editors to literally stretch the edges of a clip by generating brand-new frames, solving one of post-production’s most frustrating headaches: not having quite enough footage.
Need two more seconds of someone walking out of frame? Now you can just ask Premiere Pro to fill in the blanks.
“We’re so excited to see how the Premiere Pro community uses Generative Extend in 4K and AI-powered Media Intelligence to create stories that capture our imaginations," said Ashley Still, Adobe’s SVP of Digital Media. “By harnessing the power of Firefly and our advanced AI capabilities, we're transforming the video editing experience and enabling our customers to focus on what matters most—telling vivid, compelling stories.”
The feature works by analyzing the content of a clip and generating new video frames to extend the beginning or end—up to two seconds. On the audio front, users can generate up to 10 seconds of ambient sound to smooth over edits or transitions. And yes, the tool supports both vertical and landscape formats in 4K, which means it’s just as useful for TikTok creators as it is for documentary filmmakers.
But That’s Just One Part Of a Broader AI-powered Premiere Pro!
A new AI Search panel lets editors use plain language to find specific moments in their footage. Want all the “close-ups of hands chopping vegetables”? Just type that in. Adobe’s AI will do the rest.
Captions are also getting smarter. Premiere Pro’s AI Caption Translation can now convert subtitles into 27 different languages in just a few clicks, helping creators reach global audiences without spending hours on manual translation.
Color workflows have been streamlined too. With Premiere’s new color management system, log and raw footage is automatically converted to SDR or HDR—no LUTs, no guesswork. Adobe says this brings a more consistent look across projects, especially when dealing with footage from different cameras.
Much More To Come
The Premiere Pro updates are part of a wider rollout of AI enhancements across Adobe’s creative suite. After Effects also received a bump this week, with a new high-performance preview engine, HDR monitoring, and upgraded 3D motion tools.
While Adobe has been teasing its AI ambitions for a while now, this marks one of its most practical applications to date. No flashy gimmicks—just tools that solve real problems editors face every day.
Generative Extend is currently in beta and will roll out widely this May.
