Mark Zuckerberg Reveals New ‘Superintelligence Labs’ Unit: Poaches the Best from OpenAI

Ready for the next big AI showdown? Mark Zuckerberg is pulling out all the stops, recruiting OpenAI’s brightest minds to take on the tech giants!

Meta's push to dominate the world of artificial intelligence just took a giant leap forward. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has officially unveiled Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new initiative aimed at developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that could rival the industry’s best.

In a move that signals both ambition and urgency, Zuckerberg is pulling out all the stops—recruiting some of the brightest minds from competitors like OpenAI and Google to make it happen.

A New Chapter for Zuckerberg Begins

Meta’s growing interest in AI goes beyond just chatbots and conversational agents. Zuckerberg has always been upfront about his vision of building AI systems. It is no longer just about chatbots and virtual assistants; Meta is indeed setting its sights on Artificial Superintelligence

Futuristic AI tools like ChatGPT are pushing boundaries, and Mark Zuckerberg seems to be securing Meta’s place at the forefront of this revolution.

“We’re going to call our overall organization Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This includes all of our foundations, product, and FAIR teams, as well as a new lab focused on developing the next generation of our models,” Zuckerberg wrote in the memo on Monday.

A Competitive Talent Hunt

According to multiple sources, Meta has quietly scooped up several leading AI researchers and engineers from OpenAI. These individuals, who played key roles in developing cutting-edge AI systems, are expected to jumpstart Meta’s long-term vision of artificial superintelligence.

Meta is reportedly offering compensation packages that could reach as high as $100 million in the first year (with total earnings reaching up to $300 million over four years).

The strategy (however aggressive) has already paid off. Several high-profile hires from rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have joined the superintelligence labs team.

Among the most notable new recruits are:

  • Shuchao Bi: Co-creator of GPT-4o voice mode and o4-mini.
  • Jiahui Yu: Former lead of OpenAI's perception team.
  • Trapit Bansal: A key figure in the development of reinforcement learning on chain-of-thought models.
  • Pei Sun: Former Google Research scientist specializing in image generation.

OpenAI's Response

OpenAI has expressed concern over Meta's recruitment efforts. CEO Sam Altman criticized the approach, suggesting it could lead to "deep cultural problems" and emphasizing OpenAI's mission-driven focus over financial incentives. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen likened the situation to a home invasion, stating, "I have a visceral feeling right now, as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something."

What’s Next for Meta’s AI Future?

The poaching of OpenAI’s best minds is only the beginning of Meta’s ambitious AI strategy. As Zuckerberg positions Meta as a major player in the field of superintelligence, all eyes will be on how the company uses this talent to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve.

As Meta ramps up its AI efforts, the tech world is bracing for what could be the start of an entirely new chapter in the quest for artificial superintelligence. If Zuckerberg succeeds, it won’t just be a win for Meta—it could reshape the entire landscape of AI development, creating a new era of competition, innovation, and disruption.
