In a move that could disrupt Google Chrome’s decade-long dominance, two AI-powered browsers—OpenAI’s new offering (set to launch soon)  and Perplexity’s Comet—are emerging as serious contenders in the browser market.

OpenAI’s AI-Powered Browser to Debut Soon

Expected to roll out in the coming weeks, the browser will incorporate OpenAI’s advanced AI agents, including products like Operator, which can perform tasks such as booking reservations or filling out forms directly on websites.

Perplexity’s Comet Browser: The New AI Challenger

Not to be outdone, Perplexity, a startup known for its AI-driven answer engine, has launched Comet, an AI-powered browser that also aims to challenge Google’s long-standing hold on the market.

Built on Google’s open-source Chromium project, Comet uses Perplexity’s AI search engine as the default, delivering concise, AI-generated answers with source citations, rather than traditional search results.

Available now to Perplexity Max subscribers and select invitees, Comet includes a built-in AI assistant that supports users in tasks such as summarizing web pages, scheduling, or making product comparisons.

With a conversational interface that moves beyond the traditional “click-and-search” browsing model, Comet positions itself as a “thought partner,” aiming to transform the browsing experience into something much more interactive and task-oriented.

A Growing Threat to Google’s Ad Business?

The timing of these AI browser launches couldn’t be more significant. With over 500 million weekly active ChatGPT users, OpenAI’s new browser could potentially undercut Google’s advertising revenue model, which is heavily reliant on data gathered through Chrome.

Both OpenAI and Perplexity are betting on AI to make browsing smarter and more efficient, but also more private, positioning themselves as competitors not just to Chrome, but to Google’s entire data-driven advertising empire.
