A new strategic partnership sees NVIDIA investing up to $100 billion to power OpenAI’s next-generation models, marking a giant leap towards AGI.

OpenAI and NVIDIA have announced a strategic deal for the deployment of at least 10 gigawatts of advanced NVIDIA systems. This will supercharge OpenAI's AI infrastructure for training and running its next generation of models.

With an expected investment of up to $100 billion, NVIDIA's involvement will help OpenAI push the boundaries of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and further solidify its standing as a leader in AI innovation.

Further, the new partnership represents a culmination of years of cooperation between the two tech giants. According to Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, the two companies have long been at the centre of AI development. Huang stated,

“NVIDIA and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT…This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward—deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”

As the demand for AI technologies continues to soar, the infrastructure required to support these innovations must scale to meet the needs of businesses, developers, and consumers. OpenAI’s rapid growth has already seen its user base swell to over 700 million weekly active users, and the latest partnership with NVIDIA promises to accelerate this growth further by enhancing AI model training capabilities.

The Future of AI Depends on Computing Power

The first phase of this monumental project is expected to come online in the second half of 2026. This will utilize NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform to provide the computing power necessary to develop next-gen AI models. For OpenAI, access to this powerful infrastructure will be a game-changer, as Sam Atman mentioned,

“Everything starts with compute…Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”

A Strategic Investment with Big Implications

In addition to providing vital infrastructure, NVIDIA’s investment will give the company a financial stake in OpenAI. This strategic move positions NVIDIA as a key player in OpenAI’s success and strengthens its position in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.

Soon after the announcement, NVIDIA’s stock price surged following the announcement, highlighting the market’s optimism about the potential of this partnership. Reuters mentioned that Nvidia shares rose as much as 4.4%.

Further, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, shared his excitement about the new deal. He mentioned;

“We’ve utilized their platform to create AI systems that hundreds of millions of people use every day. We’re excited to deploy 10 gigawatts of compute with NVIDIA to push back the frontier of intelligence and scale the benefits of this technology to everyone.”

As the partnership progresses, this deal is part of a broader trend in the tech industry, where major players like Microsoft, Oracle, and Intel have been making substantial investments in AI infrastructure. The agreement between OpenAI and NVIDIA also marks a pivotal moment in the AI revolution, one that could unlock unprecedented opportunities for innovation and growth in the years to come.
