A leaked blog post reveals Google’s bold new Android design language, Material 3 Expressive, focused on emotion, speed, and accessibility.
Google slipped out a secret and has inadvertently disclosed details about its forthcoming Android design overhaul, dubbed "Material 3 Expressive." The revelation came through a prematurely published blog post, which was swiftly removed but not before keen-eyed observers archived its contents. This leak offers an early glimpse into what Google describes as its most extensively researched design update to date.
According to the leaked information, Material 3 Expressive is the culmination of a three-year collaborative effort involving 46 separate studies and over 18,000 participants worldwide. The initiative began in 2022 when a research intern questioned the uniformity and perceived dullness of existing Material Design applications. This inquiry sparked a comprehensive exploration into creating a more emotionally resonant and user-friendly interface.
"Material 3 Expressive was born out of research—not in the 41 shades of blue kind of way, which delegated design decisions to data, but in a collaborative inquiry spanning research, design, and engineering," the blog post noted.
Material 3 Expressive emphasizes the strategic use of color, shape, size, motion, and containment to enhance usability and visual appeal. The design aims to make interfaces more engaging and intuitive, helping users identify key elements up to four times faster compared to the current Material 3 design. Notably, the new design language also bridges usability gaps across age groups, enabling users over 45 to perform tasks as efficiently as younger users.
The research delved into various aspects of user interaction, including eye-tracking studies to determine where users focus their attention, assessments of different progress indicators to make waiting times feel shorter, and evaluations of button sizes to improve tap accuracy without overwhelming the interface.
Beyond usability, Material 3 Expressive appears to influence users' perceptions of brand modernity and relevance. Google's studies indicated a 34% increase in perceived modernity and a 32% boost in subculture relevance, suggesting that the expressive design makes brands feel more contemporary and "in-the-know." Additionally, there was a 30% rise in perceived rebelliousness, positioning brands as bold and innovative leaders willing to break from convention.
While Material 3 Expressive introduces a more vibrant and emotionally engaging design, Google advises developers to apply it judiciously. The company emphasizes that expressive design is not a one-size-fits-all solution and may not be suitable for all applications. For instance, while a music app might benefit from a more expressive interface, a banking app might require a more restrained approach.
Developers are encouraged to start experimenting with the updated Material 3 Design Kit for Figma and to consider user needs and critical user journeys when determining the appropriate design tactics and components.
Although the blog post was quickly taken down, the accidental reveal has generated excitement about the future of Android design. Material 3 Expressive is expected to be officially unveiled at Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20-21 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The event will include livestreamed keynotes, developer sessions, and product announcements around Android 16 and Google’s other innovations.
