Google brings its AI assistant to millions of Chrome users, just weeks after a federal judge spared it from a historic split.

Recently, Google announced that it is embedding its Gemini AI directly into the Chrome browser for U.S. desktop users. The new integration means Chrome users can summon Gemini to explain complex webpages, compare information across multiple tabs, and even retrieve websites visited days earlier. Google said the tool will also be available on Android devices, with an iOS rollout coming soon. Moreover, businesses using Google Workspace will gain access in the weeks ahead.

Gemini is pitched as more than a search assistant. Chrome users can now ask it to organize trip itineraries from scattered tabs, revisit a forgotten shopping page, or condense information across websites. In a blog post, Google described the tool as “an AI companion built directly into your browsing,”. The company also added that these features are a time-saver while stressing that users remain in control.

“In the coming months, Chrome users will be able to hand off day-to-day tasks to Gemini, such as ordering groceries or booking a haircut.”

Here are 10 key features from Google which was shared on Thursday:

  • Gemini can explain tricky or complex content on any webpage you’re viewing.
  • You’ll soon be able to let Gemini take over repetitive tasks, for example, ordering groceries or booking appointments.
  • Compare info from different tabs, and get it boiled down into one easy summary.
  • Recall previously visited sites simply by asking; no need to dig through history.
  • Seamless tie-ins with Google apps like Calendar, YouTube, and Maps without leaving the current tab.
  • AI-powered search right from the address bar, letting you ask long, detailed questions.
  • Ask questions about a page you’re on, plus follow-ups, without switching context.
  • More protection against online scams: Chrome will better detect deceptive sites and fake giveaways.
  • Smarter handling of annoying or spammy notifications and stricter control on permissions requests.
  • One-click fixes for compromised passwords on supported websites.

Bigger Stakes for Google

The timing of Gemini’s arrival is notable. Just weeks ago, a federal judge ruled against calls to break up Google over antitrust concerns, a decision that preserved the company’s ability to keep search, Chrome, and its ad business under one roof.

Despite Gemini’s growing presence across Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and now Chrome, analysts say Google still trails behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT in consumer buzz and adoption. However, Bloomberg reported, noting that Gemini’s agent-like abilities are designed to win back ground in the AI race.

What’s Next

Agentic browsing, as Google calls it, will soon allow Gemini to complete entire tasks on behalf of users, from booking travel to handling online errands. For now, the tool is rolling out as an assistant designed to make sense of the internet’s clutter. Whether this deeper integration strengthens Google’s hand in the face of ongoing regulatory scrutiny remains an open question.
