Spotify upgrades its AI DJ with voice controls, letting Premium users make music requests by simply talking to the app.
Spotify is turning up the personalization dial on its AI-powered DJ feature. Starting this week, Premium users can speak directly to the AI DJ using voice commands to request specific songs, artists, or vibes. Just press and hold the DJ button in the app, say something like, “Play some mellow indie for a rainy day,” and let the DJ take it from there.
The update was officially rolled out on May 13 and is now live in English for Premium subscribers in over 60 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia.
This isn’t just a gimmick. Spotify is building on the same natural language tech that powers its AI Playlist feature, which launched earlier this year. But now, instead of typing out a mood or theme, users can just speak their musical desires — no scrolling or tapping required.
The voice behind the AI DJ remains Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships and the original inspiration for the DJ’s personality. But behind the voice, the tech is evolving.
“Serving up suggestions using AI and insights from our global editorial experts, DJ helps you uncover new tracks, rediscover old favorites, and connect deeply with the music you love.”

The feature leverages a mix of generative AI, natural language processing, and Spotify’s human editorial expertise to make music selections feel timely and personal.
Spotify's move to deepen AI integration isn’t just about flashy features—it’s about transforming how users interact with music. With rivals like Apple and Amazon investing in AI-powered assistants, Spotify is carving out its space in voice-first experiences.
Still, not everything is seamless. As Android Authority pointed out, the feature currently lacks screen-free activation like “Hey Spotify,” meaning it still requires some manual engagement. But it’s a clear step toward a more conversational streaming experience.
This update is part of a broader push from Spotify to make AI a central part of the listening experience. With generative AI continuing to evolve, expect the DJ to get smarter and more versatile over time.
For now, it's a bold step in making music discovery feel a little more human — even if the voice you're talking to is all machine.
