The new feature, rolling out to the U.S., transforms static photos into dynamic video clips with the push of a button, making creative storytelling more accessible than ever.
Google Photos is taking a significant leap forward in AI-powered creativity with the integration of its video generation model, Veo 3. This new functionality, located within the recently launched "Create" tab, allows users to effortlessly turn their still images into short, high-quality video clips, bringing personal memories to life. The update is a key part of Google’s ongoing strategy to embed advanced generative AI directly into its most popular consumer products.
Accessible from the main menu, the AI video generation feature simplifies the complex process of video creation. Users simply select a photo from their gallery and choose one of two prompts: "Subtle movements" for a gentle animation, or "I'm feeling lucky" for a more dramatic, surprising effect, such as making a subject dance or adding a shower of confetti. The Veo 3 model, an upgrade from its predecessor, enhances the resolution and realism of these generated videos, offering a more cinematic result.
This release marks a pivotal moment for Google Photos, shifting its role from a simple cloud storage solution to a powerful, AI-driven creative suite. By making video generation accessible to millions of users, Google is empowering people to reimagine their photo libraries and share their memories in more engaging, dynamic formats. While the free version in Google Photos does not include audio generation, this update sets the stage for future enhancements and broader AI capabilities.
