Microsft has recently announced that it will launch Xbox mobile gaming store for iOS and Android next year. However, the plan is dependent on its approval for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft plans to launch an Xbox store on mobile devices, specifically iOS and Android, as early as next year, according to Phil Spencer, the head of the company’s gaming division.
This plan is dependent on the approval of regulators for Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The company filed regulatory documents with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority last year about the Xbox store for mobile devices.
If the deal goes through, Activision Blizzard games like the Call of Duty series will also be available on NVIDIA's GeForce Now streaming service under a 10-year deal with Microsoft. However, users will need to purchase game copies from the Xbox PC, Steam, or Epic Games stores to play them on GeForce Now.
Microsoft is working towards creating a world where Xbox and third-party content can be played on any screen where users wish to play games. The Digital Markets Acts (DMA) of the European Union will require major platforms to open their devices to competing app stores, which could offer a huge opportunity for Microsoft. The company is planning for the DMA and says it would be "pretty trivial" to adapt its existing Xbox and Game Pass apps to sell games and subscriptions through mobile devices.
