Microsoft to take further measures to make the security of its upcoming AI tool watertight.
Microsoft Corporation has been behind many AI tools. However, currently, it is revising its plan for the release of its new artificial intelligence tool known as “Recall” for its Windows software.
Initially, the tool was set to deploy on June 18, 2024. However, it will undergo testing with a small group of users via the Windows Insider Program. The decision was taken after the current security scrutiny of Microsoft’s products and concerns raised by security researchers.
Recall was unveiled in the month of May. It has been designed to create a record of user activity on their personal computers. The functionality aims to streamline tasks like sorting emails, searching files, managing daily digital workflows, etc.
However, almost immediately after its announcement, security experts raised alarms about the potential vulnerabilities Recall can introduce. The primary concern is that the records generated and stored locally on users’ PCs can be accessed by malicious actors. If exposed, it can pose significant privacy and security risks.
In response, Microsoft assured that the tool would be shipped “off” and it would require an opt-in feature to activate it. Also, necessary security measures have been taken.
In fact, in a blog on Microsoft’s website, it is stated, “We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security. Following receiving feedback on Recall from our Windows Insider Community, as we typically do, we plan to make Recall (preview) available for all Copilot+ PCs coming soon.”
In summary, Microsoft’s decision to test Recall showcases a proactive approach to address security concerns. By doing this, the company is hoping to ensure that the new AI feature will not only enhance user productivity but will upload higher security and privacy standards.
