ByteDance-owned Lemon8, an Instagram rival, has entered the top 10 charts on the US App Store after a sudden surge of user acquisition efforts.
The app is described as a "lifestyle community" and has gained 16 million global downloads since its launch in March 2020. The fact that the app was launched globally last year but has never ranked in the Top 200 Overall Charts in the US confirms a significant and recent user acquisition push on the app publisher's part.
ByteDance might be leveraging TikTok, one of its channels, to drive app installs, as a number of creators recently began posting about Lemon8 on the platform, many of whose reviews are extremely positive but not marked as sponsored content.
However, there are suspicions that ByteDance may pay influencers for their posts. The sudden interest in Lemon8 has led some to speculate whether it could be a TikTok ban backup plan as US lawmakers plan for a TikTok ban or forced sale.
