Meta Introduces Instagram Inspired Account Status Feature to Threads App

Meta’s Threads now tells you if your posts are being silenced. Account Status shows why your reach dropped—and what you can do about it.

In a move to increase user trust and content clarity, Meta-owned social media platform Threads has introduced a new “Account Status” feature—offering users a behind-the-scenes look at how their posts and account activities are moderated. Much like Instagram’s similar tool, this addition reflects Threads' ongoing effort to create a more transparent and user-aware platform as it continues to rival X (formerly Twitter).

A Strategic Step for Meta

Announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri through a post on Threads, the feature has also been confirmed by digital creators and app analysts on X. It’s part of a broader Meta strategy to sharpen Threads’ moderation capabilities while enhancing user control.

What is the “Account Status” Feature?

Accessible directly from the Settings section under the Privacy tab in the Threads app, the Account Status feature gives users a clear snapshot of their account’s health. It helps users understand whether their content has been flagged, restricted, or hidden due to policy violations—explaining why certain posts may not be performing well in the feed.

The feature is packed with advanced insights including, details of any posts or messages taken down for violating Threads' Community Guidelines, Notifications if posts have been algorithmically demoted, reducing their visibility in feeds like the “For You” tab, alerts about any temporary restricted features, such as posting or messaging limitations, and more.

A Push for Clarity Amid Growing User Base

Since launching in July 2023, Threads has experienced exponential growth, now boasting over 320 million monthly active users. The platform has steadily rolled out updates to improve usability and moderation—essential steps as it competes with other social media platforms like X and newer entrants like Bluesky.

This new feature isn’t launching in isolation. Threads is also introducing several user-centric updates like spoiler tags, interest indicators, and post insights & scheduling. Additionally, Threads is exploring default feed customization options, allowing users to set their feed to “Following” or other preferences—moving away from a fully algorithmic experience.

Why Now?

The rollout of Account Status comes at a time when Threads is facing criticism over moderation inconsistencies, engagement bait, and the occasional spread of misinformation. By providing users with transparent feedback and a clear appeal path, Meta is hoping to preempt the kind of trust erosion that has challenged its competitors.

As Threads matures, features like Account Status reflect a platform trying to learn from its peers’ mistakes—offering creators, casual users, and brands more clarity, control, and confidence in how their content is handled!
