How To Publish Your First App On Google Play

Step-by-step guide for you. To Publish Your First App On Google Play

If you are someone anyhow related to app development industry, you must be well aware of the knowledge it takes to either develop or publish your app on the Google Play Store. Of course, the things are not much technical but to be on safer side, it is important to know all the aspects well enough.

When developers publish their application on the Google Play or any other similar store, they perform two main tasks, including;

  • Preparing the release: Preparing for the release is a multi-step process that involves a number of tasks to be performed carefully within the estimated time frame. The early release generally aims to provide offerings for the beta version.
  • Releasing the app to the users: Preparing the release of an app to the users involves more complication. The app must remain free of bugs that require robust testing and release of that particular version to the users.

Let’s explore how to upload the apps on the Google Play

Google Play has more than 1 billion monthly active users, which makes it one of the most popular platforms for selling the Android application. And to get the best return on their applications, it is a good network of for developers. This write-up is a step-by-step guide that will explain everything about how to upload your first app on Google Play.

Editor’s note: The article assumes readers to have accomplished mobile app development basics.

Step 1: Create the developer’s account

Before you can start with the publishing requirement, it is essential to have the developer’s account that you can use to sign up. Users can sign up using their existing Google Play account.

Signing up is extremely easy, but there is a $25 fee that developers need to submit prior to starting with their Google Play accounts. It is suggested to review the developer’s development agreement carefully, accept the same, fill out all the important account details, select a name for your developer’s account (this will be reflected as your permanent account name), choose the payment option (either credit or debit) and there you go. Once you set these requirements, you are done with the initial settings. Additional details can always be added later.

Worth notifying: It takes nearly 48 hours to process the registration fully.

Step 2: Link the merchant account

In case, you are planning in-app purchases, it is vital to creating the payments center profile i.e. merchant profile. Here are the details to do the set up.

  1. Sign in to your Play Console
  2. Select on Download Reports – Financial
  3. Click on the ‘Set up a merchant account now’
  4. Fill out your business information

Once you create the profile completely, it automatically gets attached to the developer’s account. With a merchant account, it becomes easier to manage the sales along with monthly payouts. It also helps to analyze the sales reports from the Play Console only.

Step 3: Developing the application

As soon as you setup the Google Play Console, it is now time for adding the application. Here is how to add up the application.

  1. Reach to ‘All applications’ tab in the menu
  2. Now select 'Create Application'
  3. Choose the app’s default language from the drop-down menu
  4. Add a short app description
  5. Tap on “Create”

As soon as you add the app, Google Play will reflect the app name as the title. The information on the app name and the description can be changed anytime even after the app is published.

After completing the procedure, you will be taken to the store entry page, at this stage, you will have to add all the required information about the application along with the app store linking.

Step: 4 Prepare store listing

The app store listing matters as it provides all the important information about your product to the users.

Worth notifying, you can always complete this step later or save the same in the draft. However, I am going to explain this step here only before moving to the next level.

Product detail

Product Details

These are the crucial details that you need to fill in as per the character limit listed here.

While writing either the app title or the app description, it is vital to quote something of value to the users. It will work as the unique selling point for your application. It is important to make the right use of keywords without overloading the same.

The graphic details

The graphics assets of your app include screenshots, images, videos, promotional graphics, and icons so that it could display the information about your application. Among all these details the vital information that is mandatory to include is screenshots, a feature graphic, and a high-resolution icon. Other details can be added further. Here is Google’s take on graphic assets

Language and translation

This section about your app has in-language screenshots along with other localized images. Users can view the automated translation of the application with the help of Google.

As the heading explains, this section includes the type of your application and the category it belongs to. The drop-down menu will include a number of options that you could include as the name.

The drop-down menu will offer you a number of choices that you can choose from. Pick one that your app fits into. You can also add the section to rate your content, which you can get easily by uploading an APK.

Contact details

Enter your contact details in this section to help your customers get support regarding the application. Either include one or multiple contact channels including email, contact numbers, as well as the phone numbers.

Making it easier for the customers to contact your business is one of the most essential elements for every business. In addition to this, it is also important to add the contact details for publishing the application

Privacy policy

Every app follows a comprehensive privacy policy that your app needs to have as well. The privacy policy includes everything about your application. It is important for you to disclose to users how your app collects information, the related data, and other valuable information.

Include all the active links, and with this step, you're done with the app listing procedure entirely. After entering all the important information, go forward and click on the save draft. You can always change the details later.

Step 5: Upload APK to an app release

Now that you are done with the basics of creating the app, it is now time to upload the APK. The APK is the system that contains everything about your app functionality and the required elements to work on a device. There are multiple options that Google Play offers to upload and release the APK. But before uploading the file, it is crucial to creating the app release.

To create the release, go back to step 3 and select the app you created here. You will find a menu on the left side. From there navigate to “release management” and then tap “app release”.

You will find different types of releases that you need to choose from including internal test, a closed test, an open test, and a production release. The first three releases are for testing out the application among a selected users’ group. The step is for ensuring the app is working properly prior to it is released for general masses.

The step is vital as it allows enough time for the developers to know all the bugs if there are any in the application and rectifies the same prior to releasing the same. Creating a production release will offer the access to the users. Once you are done with this step, tap on “create release”.

You will have a screen as follows that will help you to add the details displayed on-screen to add your APK file. Name your APK along with describing the release.

Upload APK

Step 6: Time to provide the appropriate content rating

Assigning the rating is vital to let it preview as a rated application. Otherwise, it will show up as “unrated”. Google Play may remove the unrated apps. So, it is always better to rate it to be on the safer side. To rate out the same, you need to go through a questionnaire. It can be accessed easily when you select your app in the Google Play Console by navigating to “store presence”. You will find the content rating on the left menu.

Make sure you put the right entries about your application. Misleading entries may prove to be fatal as Google Play may remove your application. Also, the appropriate content rating will help to get the right audience that will gradually help your app to grow.

Step 7: The pricing and the distribution

In order to go successfully through this procedure, you need to have an apt strategy as the monetization technique. You can either offer it as free or as a paid offering for the users depending upon the strategy you have.

Pricing Details

The interface will appear like this. From here you can choose either you need to offer your app for free or through a paid version. Set the price in this section. Also, choose the location you are wishing to distribute your app to. You can also opt to offer your app on the specific devices.

Step: 8 Publish your app finally

With all these settings you are almost done with the app publishing. The final step is to review the app prior to publishing the same. Before you release the app, make sure the store listing, content rating, and pricing and distribution sections have the right information about the application. Once you are done with all these details, reach to “release management” and then “app release” now tap “edit release” review it completely and then tap ‘Review and rollout release’ in order to release the same. “Confirm rollout” and you are done.

This action will publish your app all through the desired destination in the targeted country.

How was your experience?

Following the steps as illustrated above will help you to publish your application successfully in the Play Store. Publishing your app successfully is just the beginning. After that, you need to focus on app optimization to help your app reach successfully to the targeted audience. There are app store optimization tools that you could utilize to bring visibility to your application.

Also, remember to promote on various social media networking sites so that users could easily find it. Keep updating your application, analyze its performance from time to time so that you have the desired graph with you.
