Mark Zuckerberg says In-Person Engineers Perform Better Than Remote Ones at Meta

Date: March 15, 2023

Mark Zuckerberg suggests engineers perform better when they initially join Meta in-person rather than remotely, according to internal data analysis.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has revealed that engineers who joined the company in-person performed better than those who joined remotely.

The statement was based on an internal data analysis, which also showed that younger engineers in their early careers work better in person with colleagues for at least three days a week. The revelation comes as Meta cuts another 10,000 jobs and cancels lower-priority projects in a bid to improve efficiency.

Zuckerberg emphasized that "in-person time helps build relationships and get more done" and encouraged employees to find more opportunities to work with colleagues in person. Despite its commitment to distributed work, Meta's recent remote-work embrace may be reconsidered, as the company doubles down on metaverse ambitions and shrinks its real estate footprint.

While the benefits of remote work are undeniable, Meta's experience shows that working in person may still have an edge in building trust and fostering relationships.
