Apple set to launch new classical music app with advanced search and immersive audio capabilities

Date: March 10, 2023

Apple Music Classical, a new standalone app dedicated to classical music, is set to launch on March 28th, offering a deeper search function and composer metadata.

Apple is launching a new standalone app, Apple Music Classical, on March 28th.

The app, which specializes in classical music, was originally planned to be released by the end of 2022, but was delayed after the company acquired the music service Primephonic.

According to Apple, the app will provide deeper search and composer metadata that set it apart from mainstream music services. It will also include immersive spatial audio, which is particularly suited for classical music, as well as hundreds of curated playlists, thousands of exclusive albums, and deep-dive guides for many key works.

Apple Music Classical will stream at up to 192 kHz/24 bit hi-res lossless, and will offer thorough and accurate classical metadata. Listeners will be able to search "by composer, work, conductor, or even catalog number, and find specific recordings instantly."

The app will be available from the App Store and comes included with a standard Apple Music subscription. While it will be exclusive to iOS at first, an Android version is coming soon. However, it's important to note that there won't be a native iPad version of the app, and offline downloads will not be available at launch.

With Apple Music Classical, Apple is hoping to appeal to classical fans and differentiate itself from competitors like Spotify. The regular Apple Music service is already multi-platform, so it makes sense for Classical to follow the same path.
