Twitter's New Feature Notifies Users When a Retweeted Tweet is Fact-Checked by Community Notes

Date: February 22, 2023

The new Community Notes feature will notify users if a tweet they liked, retweeted, or replied to receives information from Community Notes contributors.

Attention Twitter users!

The platform has introduced a new feature called Community Notes to combat the spread of misinformation. Now, if you like, retweet, or reply to a tweet that receives contextual information from Community Notes contributors, Twitter will notify you.

This feature will provide extra context to the users who might otherwise miss it. Twitter has been pushing its algorithmic feed for a while now, and the new Community Notes program will help debunk false information and, thus, provide better recommendations.

The program was first introduced in the US under the name “Birdwatch” and renamed “Community Notes” by Elon Musk after he bought Twitter. While the program has been available globally since December, the global context is still missing from it.

As Twitter's reliance on algorithms and crowdsourcing for content moderation has increased rapidly, the burden could further increase as the company has shut off free API access to researchers, who have contributed to pointing out hate speech and misinformation on the platform.
