Nokia Acquires Unium, A Mesh Networking Startup For Home Wifi-Networks

The startup provides solution for weak network spots in Home Wifi network using mesh network technology

Nokia, the company which marked its comeback last year with new smartphone releases is preparing for something big. The Finnish tech company has announced the acquisition of Seattle based startup, Unium that provides internet speed solutions using mesh network technology. Nokia has acquired the company in order to complete its under the hood home Wifi products.

Unium is known for improving the internet speed in the home-based Wifi network by implementing the mesh network technology. The company aims to solve the most frustrating problem in the home networking services of either losing or getting low network strength. With the help of created mesh network, the company fills the dead or slow network spots in the home. Unium also claims that its software learns the connected device's performance and capabilities to enhance the user experience.

The terms of the deal are still unknown and there is no actual information about how much Nokia has spent to get Unium. Since it launched back in 2002 Unium has raised almost $26.7 million in the funding. The company has served to the Department of Defence before working for Google Fiber, the high-speed internet service from Alphabet Inc.

Unium is another addition to Nokia’s chain to get deeper into the home Wifi network service for its upcoming products. Earlier, Nokia has acquired Comptel, a software based-data communication along with Nakina Systems and Deepfield. Nokia claims to currently serve 47 million homes with its tech and planning to penetrate more in the coming time. "We look forward to having the Unium team join us. The home networking market is booming and whole-home Wi-Fi is a key enabler for this. Today's Wi-Fi solutions still have serious issues with sticky clients, interference, coverage gaps and capacity issues. With Unium inside, our Nokia Wi-Fi solution will deliver an unmatched user experience, going beyond what standard mesh Wi-Fi solutions deliver today." said Federico Guillén, President of Nokia's Fixed Networks business group.
