Xiaomi launched Mi Max in 2017 as its first attempt to offer the larger display phone for the users. The 6-inch power display of the Xiaomi phone was big enough to grab the users’ attention. However, the company already have 5.7-inch display phablet, Mi Note in the market, but that is a flagship phone from the company. On the other hand, Mi Max is a powerful budget phone with all the features for the people looking something without putting the hole in their pocket. The idea also worked for Xiaomi as Mi Max was successful and received a huge demand form the consumers. In 2017, Xiaomi has released the upgraded Mi Max 2 by eliminating the some of the flaws from its predecessor.
I have reviewed the Mi Max 2 to know whether it continues to offer all the premium features at a budget price like its predecessor nor not.
Full metal unibody Designed for one-hand use
Full metal body
2.5D glass at the front
Looks huge in the hand
Mi Max 2 designs come with few tweaks compare to the last model of the Max series. However the size of the screen is same, but the whole metal body makes it look more premium. Xiaomi has made the edges round of the Mi MAX 2 which makes it more comfortable while holding in the hands. The front of the screen is covered with 2.5D glass which adds a classy look. The full metal makes the Xiaomi phone a little bit slippery but you will get used to the phone in no time. The smartphone is 7.6mm thick and provides a good grip, however, it weighs 210 gm which is s point of an concern sometimes. The Xiaomi phone comes with a minimal bezel and has the backlit capacitive touch buttons at the bottom of the display. There is a front camera at the top along with the sensor and there is a 3.5 mm jack. You will find a USB-C port at the bottom which is located between the grills, where one side is a speaker and other is just a design element.
The volume key and the power is positioned at the right side while the dual-SIM tray is located at the top left side of the phone. Xiaomi Mi Max 2 own 12MP rear camera that is placed at the top left corner with a dual LED flash. The phone with the screen more than 6-inch display and it makes a little bit tough to carry it in the pocket.
6.44 inch IPS LCD display
Contains 16:9 aspect ratio
74 percent screen to body ratio
Mi Max 2 comes with 6.44-inch display serving the 1080 X 1920 pixels resolution with the density of 342 PPI. The phone's display is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass that serves well against the scratches and sudden impacts. The Display of the Xiaomi phone is composed of an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen having 16:9 aspect ratio with the 74 percent screen to body ratio. The big screen of the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 makes it more enjoyable while watching videos that comes up with all the colors.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset
Octa Core 2.0GHz processor
4GB RAM with 32/64/128GB internal storage
Xiaomi tried to make a phone blended with a powerful hardware support with the premium looks. Mi Max 2 comprises a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset that is being powered by an Octa-Core 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 processor. In addition, the processing unit of the Xiaomi phone has been coupled with 4GB RAM that is available with three variants offering 32/64/128GB of internal storage. The 4GB RAM with the Snapdragon 625 processor is enough to take you on the lighting fast speed of experience without an issue. The fingerprint sensor is mounted at the back that is sometimes quite hard to reach while holding the phone with one hand only. On the software side, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 run on the Android 7.1.1 (Nougat), that receives all the frequent updates from the company. Android of the phone is overlaid by the Xiaomi's own feature skin, MIUI 8.0 that is upgradable up to MIUI 8.5.
12MP rear camera with dual LED flash
5MP front camera
5,300 mAh battery
With Mi Max 2 you will be getting a fine 12MP rear camera having the f/2.2 aperture that is capable of capturing the low-light images. Thye camera offers the features like phase detection autofocus, check quality, face detection, HDR mode and some other basic option. The Rear camera is also equipped with a dual LED flash which further improves the image quality in low-light areas. On the front side of Mi Max 2, you will find a front camera having a 5MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is available in dual SIM that includes the Nano-hybrid slot, which makes the users choose between second SIM or microSD card. Xiaomi has given a massive 5300mAh Li-Ion battery that supports the quick charging feature.
The Xiaomi phone comes with a powerful specification, which is supported by Android Nougat. Overall experience with Mi Max 2 was good, the phone makes me feel like I own a flagship premium smartphone without paying that much. The battery is huge and it is capable of performing for a long time, whether you play games or jump between the social media apps. Mi Max performed well almost every task I have thrown at it, I keep switching between the apps, tried high-resolution games and even operated it continuously for hours. The Xiaomi phone stood well against all the task, however, the only problem that I encountered was carrying the large phone with me, as it doesn't fit in the pocket perfectly.
So, if you believe you can handle the 6.4 screen without getting annoyed then Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is good to go.
Where to buy: MSRP $253.00
