Asus Zenfone 5Z was first revealed by the company back in February at MWC 2018. Now, Asus has finally launched the smartphone, and it will be coming to the UK market next month. Zenfone 5Z is an exciting upgrade from the company that owns an edge-to-edge display. The company announced the phone earlier this year and revealed that it has a notch display like iPhone X. However, since then we have received plenty of smartphones having the same design. The Asus phone comprises powerful hardware support that is wrapped up in a beautiful body.

Design

  • 18.7:9 aspect ratio
  • Notch display
  • Front/back glass body

The smartphone comes with an attractive design that you might confuse with iPhone X. Yes from notch to the rear side of the phone everything looks similar to Apple’s most expensive iPhone. The Asus Zenfone 5Z is built of glass body at front and back, which makes it look a bit glossy. The 6.2-inch screen at the front is available in edge to edge design that has 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The phone owns an 83.6% screen to body ratio which is possible only because of the notch display. The sensors and front camera are mounted on the minimal bezel that has a very thin chin at the bottom. Besides, there is also a facial recognition system for unlocking the phone.

The flagship smartphone comprises latest Qualcomm chipset

The notch display makes the phone better than its predecessor

On flipping the phone, you will see an alluring glass back cover that is prone to fingerprints. The dual camera and the flashlight is positioned vertically similar to the iPhone X. At the center, you will see the fingerprint sensor which is the most prominent place for a phone with 6-inch display. The Asus Zenfone 5Z looks great, and you will be happy to have this well-designed phone in your hand. But, the only thing bothering me is that the phone looks like an Android version of iPhone X. So, if you buy this phone and your friends ask you why your iPhone X don't have Apple sign at the back then don't be surprised.

Specifications

  • 6.2 inches IPS LCD screen
  • 1080 x 2246 pixels resolution
  • 83.6% screen to body ratio
  • Snapdragon 845 chipset
  • Octa-core processor

Asus Zenfone sports a 6.2 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen having a notch at the top. The display of the phone offers 1080 x 2246 pixels resolution with the 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The aspect ratio and the notch display enabled the phone to achieve 83.6% screen to body ratio. The screen of Zenfone 5 is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The FHD+ display and bigger screen make the visual experience better than any other Zenfone device launched in the past. The colors and brightness of the display are precisely balanced so you can use the phone efficiently even in the sunlight.
Coming to the internal support of the phone, ZenFone 5Z comprises a powerful set up under the hood. The Asus smartphone runs on Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 chipset that is the latest you can get. The chipset of the phone is coupled with an Octa-core (4x2.7 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4x1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) processor. The processing unit of the phone is capable of challenging high-end devices like Samsung Galaxy S9. Zenfone 5Z is available under three different variants including 4GB/32GB, 6GB/64GB, and 8GB/128GB. During the review session, we have operated the Zenfone with 8GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The storage of the phone is expandable up to 400GB via microSD card that uses the SIM slot 2. The phone is blazing fast, and you won't find any delay or lag while switching between the apps. The high graphics games like PubG and crashlands runs smoothly without any interruption.

Asus has embedded a robust camera system to match up the available flagship smartphone in the market. In Asus Zenfone 5Z you will find dual rear camera having the combination of 12MP and 8MP lenses. The 12MP lens has a f/1.8 aperture, and the 5MP lens comes with f/2.0 aperture. The secondary lens enables the bokeh effect by sensing the depth while taking images. The rear camera offers the features including phase detection autofocus, gyro EIS,  face detection, HDR, and panorama. The front camera of the phone comes with a selfie booster having 8MP lens.

Fortunately, the Zenfone 5Z owns a 3.5mm jack which was unexpected considering the ongoing trend of USB-C type. The phone uses a 3300 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery that supports the fast charging. The Asus phone comes with Android 8.0 as its operating system that is customized by the company’s MIUI 9.

Price & Availability

According to the latest news from the company, the Zenfone 5Z will be launched in India today. However, there is no information about the other international market. Interestingly there are rumours that the smartphone will hit the UK market in July besides Zenfone 5. The Asus Zenfone 5Z price starts at $1,999 that means, you will be getting the basic variant of the phone at this cost

Early verdict

Asus may not hold a strong position in the smartphone market like Samsung and Apple, but it has proven its credentials from time to time. The Zenfone 5Z is a fantastic flagship smartphone that comes with the latest hardware support and features. With Zenfone 5, Asus has strong chances to make a substantial impact on the market and challenge the contemporary leaders.
