How To Choose The Best Domain Hosting Service

Never choose a domain hosting services with 99.9% reliability. To Choose The Best Domain Hosting Service

It goes without saying that choosing a domain hosting service is one of the most important decisions you will have to make when building a website. With so many types of hosting services and a wide range of packages, the beginners can easily get overwhelmed. Especially, when it comes to choosing the right provider. In this guide, we will be discussing the most important points to consider when looking for a domain hosting service:

1. Availability

The term availability is used in this industry to mean reliability or uptime. You need to choose a domain hosting service provider that has a high availability. In short, a provider that will guarantee that your website will stay online around the clock and won’t fail because of server errors or be taken offline for a long time during maintenance.

Although no hosting company can guarantee 100% reliability, most companies have 99.5% or higher. You should however avoid companies that claim 99.9% reliability. It is important that you choose a company that can guarantee at least 99.5%, which is anyway the industry standard for uptime.

2. Bandwidth limits

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data sent from your server to the browsers of your visitors. Every time a visitor loads a page on your website on their PC or phone, you are using up bandwidth. So, if you have a website that has heavy content such as videos, music, images, etc, you will need a lot of bandwidth to support it.

Some domain hosting packages have a limit to the amount of bandwidth that a website can use each month. This shouldn’t be an issue for the website that doesn’t get high traffic; however, in the event of an unexpected increase in demand or if the number of visitors are growing, you may go beyond your bandwidth allocation. In this case, your host may take your website offline for the rest of the month or you may have to pay for the extra bandwidth used.

Neither of these two options are desirable, especially when you consider the fact that going beyond your bandwidth limits is an indication of your website doing well.  What you need to do is to find a hosting provider that provides unlimited bandwidths on shared hosting packages and bandwidth on larger dedicated server plans that are so high that you are less likely to surpass them.

3. Allocation of disk space

If you have a small business that runs nothing other than a website, you don’t need a large disk space. However, if you have a large company that collects enormous amounts of data and runs powerful applications, you will need more space to store all the programs your and applications.

Since most hosting packages have either limited disk space or limit file number, you should assess your requirements carefully and consider your future needs before choosing a package that will provide the right disk space your business requires. However, you shouldn’t waste money buying a large disk space that you may not use.

4. Around the clock technical support

When managing a website, technical problems will often pop up here and there, and in most cases, website owners don’t know how to solve these problems. For this reason, you need to choose a domain hosting service that can provide 24/7 technical support. The last thing you want is to choose a hosting provider that breaks during weekends, leaving you with no option other than to wait for two good days with your website offline.

Note that the emphasis on this particular point is on technical support. You don’t want to choose a provider that claims to offer customer support only to find that its customer support team handles general inquiries only.

5. Excellent email service

Before purchasing a domain hosting service, you would want to check out the email service provided. You should be able to set up email accounts that bear the same domain as the one you have used for your website. You should also be able to use different access methods such as IMAP and POP3. In addition, choose a service you can access anywhere online and one that allows you to set up email newsletters, auto-responding, and email forwarding.

Also, check to see how well the provider protects your email. For example, do they have an option that filters spam, and monitor malware and virus? If not, you should choose another company.

6. Access to the control panel

The control panel helps you to manage your server and website. From the control panel, you can easily make changes to your website, install new software, update software and add new features. You can also upgrade your account from the control panel and add new hosting services.

Some domain hosting companies will provide you with the control panel that only gives you a few options, forcing you to contact customer support to certain things like changing your password and adding new email accounts.

7. Security

With web security increasingly becoming important, your domain hosting service should make a big difference in protecting your site. Choose a website hosting service that offers intrusion protection, strong firewalls, and protection against malware. Your potential hosting provider should also have a backup service so that when your site goes offline, you can easily restore it.

In this time and era, if a domain hosting provider doesn’t offer robust security, you should consider choosing another company.

8. Choose the right operating system

Most hosting providers offer either Windows or Linux OS. Although Windows is widely used in many home computers, the reality is that Linux is the perfect choice for running websites. However, the choice of software you will use to create your website will determine the system you will use. For example, if you want to set up a WordPress website, the best option would be Linux.

Before choosing a domain hosting service, make sure that you know about the kind of software you be using to set up your website and check again to ensure that the appropriate OS is available from that service provider.
