Google faces a huge criticism after its autonomous vehicle crashes into a Honda city in Chandler, Arizona. It seems like the tech giants are struggling with the safe testing of the self-driving vehicles. According to the police, there are some minors injuries to the drivers of both the vehicles without any serious impact.
The Police also reported that the Honda city was traveling eastbound on Boulevard where the drivers swerved into the Wymo minivan to avoid intersection with another vehicle on Friday. The Honda city ends up hitting the Google’s autonomous vehicle and both vehicles look severely damaged in the images. The sedan’s front part got totally wrecked with the front glass broken out of the vehicle, however, the van seems to be in better shape with front tire crushed into the car’s chassis.
According to ABC 15, the Waymo minivan was in the autonomous mode at slow speed with the driver behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Both the cars were towed by the authorities after the incident reported to the police. However, the information on what actions the Waymo minivan took after the sedan decided to swerved for avoiding another collision. For now, it seems like the autonomous vehicle was not directly responsible for the crash. The analysis report of the accident will come up soon from the experts and we will know the exactly what happened.
“We are currently investigating a minor injury collision involving two vehicles, one of which is a Waymo autonomous vehicle. This afternoon around noon a vehicle (Honda sedan) traveling eastbound on Chandler Blvd. had to swerve to avoid striking a vehicle traveling northbound on Los Feliz Dr. As the Honda swerved, the vehicle continued eastbound into the westbound lanes of Chandler Blvd. & struck the Waymo vehicle, which was traveling at a slow speed and in autonomous mode. There was an occupant in the Waymo vehicle sitting in the driver’s seat, who sustained minor injuries. Both the Waymo vehicle & the Honda were towed from the scene. This incident is still under investigation”, the statement was given by the local police to the Techcrunch.
Waymo is an autonomous vehicle development company that is owned by Google. The company recently announced that it is also testing the self-driving cars without the safety drivers in Arizona. This is not the first time when a self-driving vehicle is involved in a road crash in the region. In March, an Uber self-driving SUV crashed into a woman pedestrian which resulted in the death of the victim. Arizona has always been the favorite place for the companies to test their future driverless vehicles, but the recent incidents raising a question on these autonomous vehicles testing procedures.
