Apple revealed the Apple Pay support for Shanghai and Beijing transit cards in the iOS 11.3 beta version. Now, Apple users in these cities are able to use the Apple Pay app while traveling through the public transport. However, the company hasn't disclosed the news officially but several users shared on Twitter that they are using the service in these two cities.
With the update, the Shanghai Public Transportation card and Beijing Transportation Smart card are integrated into the Apple Pay. In Beijing, people use the smart card to access the different local transit facilities including trains, buses, and ferries. Now, the cardholder can also use Apple Pay to get into these public transport systems after the update. On the other hand, Shanghai people can avail the Apple Pay NFC facility to pay fares for the transport like buses, trains, ferries, and maglevs while traveling.
According to the document that Apple published, the Shanghai Public Transportation and Beijing Transportation smart card holders can directly avail the local transit facilities using the wallet app. While traveling, the user will also be able to switch between the physical card and digital Apple Pay service as the balance is synchronized by a central server. Along with this, the users can also transfer the balance from their cards to the Apple Pay anytime using the recharge option in the app.
The transit feature of Apple Pay can be availed by the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and iPhone X users in both the cities. With the integration of the transit facilities to the Apple Pay, the users will have a big relief while traveling through the public transport. The Apple Pay service can also be used via Apple Watch Series 1 and above models, however, they need to add their cards to the device first via Watch app on iPhone.
Apple is recently putting much effort in Apple Pay service to bring more users’ interest in the service. Apple Pay Cash facility was launched by the company last year in November that enables fast money transferring option for the iPhone users.
