Twitter Is Being Criticized For Its Blue Tick Verification And Here is Why

Twitter, the social media platform is again news, but not only for its 280 character support update but also a controversy over its blue tick verification system.Twitter pauses its blue tick verification, which gives authenticity to an influencing twitter account. The move comes after the tweet from Jason Kessler went viral saying that Twitter has verified his account. Kessler was accused of spreading violence in the towns of Charlottesville in August.

People are criticizing the twitter for verifying the Kessler's account on different social media platforms and even on Twitter itself. After the news of Twitter verifying Kessler's account went viral company official’s said that the system was broken and it has been paused for a while. “Verification was meant to authenticate identity and voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance” the company tweeted. “We recognize that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon.”

Currently, Twitter has paused the blue tick verification process until the system gets back on track. The system was added by Twitter to make sure that the accounts of public figures should have a proof of originality. Twitter replied that the system is similar to the badges given by Facebook and Instagram to prevent imposters to act as some else using a fake account. The verifications process of twitter involves filling up a form by the account holder which requires details like email address, phone number, website link (for brands and businesses) and a biography to know the “ area of expertise and/or a company mission.”

“We should have communicated faster on this: our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered. And we failed by not doing anything about it. Working now to fix faster” said Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter.

However, the excuses were given by the company were unsuccessful to prevent people criticizing it for Kessler’s account verification. Getting into controversy is nothing for the new fo twitter, the platform faced a boycott situation under #WomenBoycott twitter movement a month ago.
