Finally, Facebook announces to launch its long time awaited feature “Watch” to premiere the videos and short episodes. Today the company announces the addition of the ‘Watch’ tab on the platform where one can watch short, episodic videos. The section will also contain some of the live videos including the sports event for which the Facebook has streaming authority.
The video tab on the Facebook has been redesigned and will have ‘Watch’ option for short episodic videos along with the other videos. Facebook had tied up with many publisher to premiere the shows which include Buzzfeed, TTN, and Group of Nine media. The Facebook will premiere the shows created by these publishers and retain the rights of some of them. Most of the shows will be posted on Facebook and will be free to watch, however, some publishers are planning to integrate mid-roll ads to earn money from the videos.
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg had already announced the addition of TV feature on the Facebook while ago. But, there is certain question pops up in everyone's minds about these shows ,which creates doubt about its potential success. Facebook is already an addiction to the majority of the people around the globe, but will it allure the users to watch shows on the Platform?
Are people Interested to watch shows on Facebook and ready to take off time from YouTube? This one is the most prominent question that Facebook must have asked to itself before working on the new section. Even for the short stories or web series, which is very popular nowadays, YouTube holds the attention of almost every user. Facebook already has videos for the users, but they appear in the organic search and users watch them in order to get the feeds. But to watch the episodic videos week over week they have to specially come to the app. This is a huge addition by the Facebook and it will be interesting to see how users will react to it.
Facebook also shares that it will make the section an open platform which means anyone with a camera and an idea can make a video and upload something like YouTube. Making the Platform open for everyone will open the gate to endless content that may not interests majority of users. This will make the place a cluster of videos which may affect the Facebook popularity. Along with this, to operate this much of the videos, will Facebook offer efficient search option like YouTube.
Another question arises that will Facebook be able to hold the publishers for long by providing much revenue?. As the episodes will be free to watch so the only possibility is ads for the publishers, but Mark Zuckerberg is not a fan of in-video unskippable ads. Currently many publishers are excited to work with the Facebook to premiere their shows, but will Facebook will allow putting long video ads in between the shows.
Considering the point that short interesting videos are getting the most attention of the users nowadays. Facebook came up with this new addition to the platform for the users, the time will tell what change it makes in the entertainment world.
